BUILDING A SAGA FLYING V

Note from GuitarAttack:  This is a great looking guitar...love the headstock.

Key tip:  Always test paint on scrap!

From Roger

Hello -

This my build story.

As a hobby guitar player I have always wanted to do a build so I did some research and ended up buying a Saga flying V kit from Ed Roman out of Las Vegas.  It arrived in just a couple of days to my surprise so I did what anybody would do, and that is to put it together and to make sure it was worthy to continue. It was.

I first did a Harley Quinn theme with black and red split colors but the clear coat crazed up real bad so I decided to strip it down and to redo it, but this time I decided to go with a traditional cherry red gloss.  I used Krylon products on all the coatings. The playability was ok but I did have to file the nut down just about 1mm.  That 1mm made a big difference.

My big ahha moment was the ground wire, I didn't like the way Saga had the wire wrapped around the pickguard mounting screw so I drilled a small hole from the electronic cavity box through the tune-O-matic anchor hole and ran the ground wire through it and mounted the anchors.  This gave me the "PERFECT GROUND!

Key tip:  Be careful drilling around the anchors.  Make sure you do the analysis and don't drill somewhere you don't want a hole!

As an Optician by trade, I wanted to incorporate my profession into my passion so the little stainless steel flame you see at the top of the head stock is from an old Harley Davidson pair of eyeglasses that I took from one of the temples from the glasses.

All the hardware is stock and believe it or not the pickups aren't that bad but they will be replaced one day.  The tuning keys are not that great.  I have another build in the works and I will share that one too when it is complete.  Thanks for reading my story and please keep building and playing on.

Cheers!
Roger
